Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chandigarh on 17 July 2026 to open and lay foundation stones for development projects valued at roughly ₹4,700 crore. The package spans healthcare, education and road connectivity across the Union Territory.

Speaking at the event, held at Punjab Engineering College, NaMo framed the projects as part of the wider push toward a developed India, urging a modern mindset toward future technology, transport and health services.

Health and Education Get a Boost

On the healthcare side, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Advanced Mother and Child Centre and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre at PGIMER, and laid the foundation stone for a critical care block. An MBBS college at PGIMER is also cleared to begin admissions.

For students, NaMo opened the Kurukshetra Boys Hostel at Punjab Engineering College and laid the foundation stone for new research-scholar accommodation, expanding campus capacity.

Roads and the 'Model City' Theme

Infrastructure featured too, with a six-lane greenfield highway linking IT City and Kurali inaugurated and the PR Seven Spur road project foundation-stoned to ease regional connectivity.

NaMo pointed to Chandigarh as an example of planned urban growth, noting earlier investment of about ₹2,500 crore in initiatives such as an integrated command-and-control centre and smart traffic management.
